Markey to be sworn in as senator on July 16 Jul 9th 2013, 21:31, by By Associated Press, Associated Press WASHINGTON — A spokeswoman for Edward Markey, the longtime Massachusetts congressman who was elected to the Senate last month, says he will be sworn in on July 16. The 66-year-old Democrat won a special election to fill the seat held by John Kerry, who resigned earlier this year to become secretary of state. Mo Cowan has served as interim senator from Massachusetts. Markey has served in the state's congressional delegation for 37 years. He defeated Republican Gabriel Gomez in the special election.
